As I walked across Drumsheugh Gardens, my mind wandered to fifteen years earlier when I used to work at the Legal Aid Board, directly opposite The Bonham. Not a time I remember fondly, but a lovely part of town which, in my opinion, has become a real go to place in recent years with lots of new independent shops, restaurants such as Forage & Chatter, and bars like The Voyage of Buck.
I’ll cover more about The Bonham Hotel in me next post, here I want to focus on the restaurant which you can visit whether you’re a hotel guest or not.
We were there on a Thursday night when The Bonham runs their ‘Boozy Snoozy’ offer: a three course dinner and half bottle of wine per person (£23.50).
Alex had the Roast Onion Consommé with a Poached Hen’s Egg, it was a nice light way to start a meal, but still offering plenty of flavour.
I had the Chicken and Black Pudding Terrine, it was a pleasant dish but I was expecting a bigger hit of flavour from the black pudding which didn’t come through at all. The pickled onions were a little sharp for the rest of the dish, which needed a bit more seasoning to really balance everything out. The homemade croutons added a welcome crunch.
We both had the Roast Beef Onglet with Heritage Carrots and Pommes Anna, looking around the restaurant, we weren’t alone, this was a popular dish. I thought the onglet, otherwise known as hanger steak, might have been a bit tough, but I was pleasantly surprised – it was very tender. The jus was rich, and the Pommes Anna still had a bit of bite. The crispy kale finished off the dish nicely with a little hit of irony flavour.
The dessert offering was classic, Alex chose his favourite, Sticky Toffee Pudding. I was transported back to the 70’s with a Black Forest Gateau, with some very boozy cherries which were quite addictive. I was pleased to find a few more with the petit fours!
Boozy Snoozy is a great deal, £23.50 feels really cheap for three courses of really decent cookery and half a bottle of wine – I’d definitely recommend it as a midweek treat.
